Simple and clean
Turned up late, tired and grumpy, and were looked after. Clean bed linen, clean towels, clean floors. That is the main thing. The concierge was helpful with tickets and directions. Breakfast is an extra, and worth it for eggs done to order alone.
Checkout at nine is early when you have an evening flight.

Faultless from start to finish
Travelling on my own, I never felt uneasy walking back into New Town late at night. Underfloor heating in the bathroom in November is a small luxury that I noticed every morning. Double glazing that works, so the tram going past is a rumour rather than an event.
Nobody was on the desk for about forty minutes when I arrived on the Monday. There is no fridge in the room, so the wine I bought stayed warm.

Fine, but not at that price
Some of this worked, some of it did not. There is a good market on Saturday about ten minutes away that nobody had told me about. Breakfast is an extra, and worth it for eggs done to order alone. Petra at the desk was the standout - patient and genuinely useful.
Breakfast is the same every day, which by the second morning I had noticed. No kettle in the room, which for a British guest is practically a design flaw.

Genuinely lovely stay
The neighbour opposite waters her balcony at seven every morning and says hello. We ended up in the same corner cafe three mornings running, which tells you something about New Town.
The walk back to the station on the Wednesday, and that is scraping.

The desk is staffed at night, which mattered for our late arrival. Easy place to be a group without annoying anyone.
Breakfast is charged separately and is not far off cafe prices in New Town.

Easy to recommend
Double glazing that works, so the tram going past is a rumour rather than an event. Luggage storage on the last day meant a proper final afternoon rather than dragging cases about. Twenty minutes to the conference centre, laundry back same day, invoice correct first time.
Only that everywhere else now has a lot to live up to.
