Needs a proper refurbishment
The bed itself was comfortable enough.
The staircase is narrow and steep, so allow a minute or two more than you think. The Standard Double Room is smaller than the photographs suggest - two open cases will not fit on the floor.

Sorry, but no
The building is beautiful from the outside.
The photographs and the reality are not the same building. The room smelled strongly of damp and the window did not open to air it out. The photographs show a refurbished room. Ours was not one of them, and the carpet was visibly worn through. The desk was stretched thin and it showed - four requests went unanswered.

Cancelled the rest of our stay
Nothing I would put in this box, and I have thought about it.
For the money we paid this was not acceptable. The bed linen was stained. We asked for it to be changed and waited until nearly ten that night. We were given a different room from the one we booked, smaller and facing the bins, with no adjustment to the price.

Well run and welcoming
Somebody on the desk at three in the morning when our flight finally landed, still cheerful. Astonishingly quiet for somewhere this central - we never heard the street once. We booked for three nights and extended to five, which tells you what we thought of the price.
The keycards demagnetised twice and we had to go back down to the desk.

Easy to recommend
The Standard Double Room is bigger than the photographs suggest and cleverly laid out. We ended up in the same corner cafe three mornings running, which tells you something about Downtown Al-Balad.
A second bedside lamp and a couple more sockets would finish the room off.

Not what the photos promised
Booked on the photographs, which was my mistake. our daughter were happy, which is most of the review. They keep a pillow menu at reception and actually bring what you ask for.
You have to log in again every day, which is a small irritation that adds up over five nights.
