Hotel Meridian Kruununhaka sits in Kruununhaka, one of Helsinki's best-connected neighbourhoods, with Suomenlinna and Oodi Library within easy reach. What sets it apart: walk to the main sights, fitness centre open 24/7 and airport shuttle on request. The photographs are honest, which is rarer than it should be.

Good from check-in onwards
The radiator clanked at about two in the morning and then settled down, and honestly I grew fond of it. Within two streets there is a tiny tapas place and a proper greengrocer, so I ate well and cheaply.
Parking nearby is expensive, though that is Helsinki rather than the hotel.

Perfect for a long weekend
Straight to it: the location is the thing. The lift has one of those inner doors you have to pull shut, which the children opposite treated as the highlight of their week. The bathroom is bigger than the one at home, with a rain shower and a bench to put things on. The Deluxe King Room is bigger than the photographs suggest and cleverly laid out.
One person on the desk at half past nine in the evening means a queue when the airport bus arrives.

A stay of two halves
You get more for the money here than at the two places we priced up in Kruununhaka. A desk of a usable size, a proper chair and sockets where you need them.
Roadworks on the corner from half past six on the Thursday, and nobody had warned us. Hot water was slow to arrive on the fourth floor first thing.

Regretted it by the second night
Nothing I would put in this box, and I have thought about it.
I was charged a cleaning fee that was not in the booking and had to argue to get it back. Housekeeping did not come at all in five nights and I asked for towels twice. The heating did not work properly for the first four nights and the fix took until the second day.

Better in the photos
The bathroom is cleverly laid out and the shower is hot and fast. Location is the strong point - seven minutes to Temppeliaukio Church and a metro stop close by.
five floors and no lift - the Family Room is lovely once you get up there with the cases.

Handy for Löyly Sauna
Came for two nights, stayed four. Blackout curtains that meet in the middle, a mattress with some life in it, and silence after eleven. Travelling on my own, I never felt uneasy walking back into Kruununhaka late at night. Spotless, including the places nobody checks - skirting boards, the kettle, under the bed.
Only the weather, which is hardly their doing.
