Fine if you're out all day
Efficient and predictable, which is what a two-night work trip needs. Reasonably peaceful at the back of the building. The room was cleaned properly every day and the bins were never left.
The heating is on a timer and goes off at about nine, which in December you feel by morning.

Comfortable beds, good coffee
Nobody made me feel odd about eating alone, and the desk checked I had got back on the wet night. No faff with the room: dark, cool and quiet by ten.
It is a good twenty-five minutes from the nearest tram stop, further than the listing suggests.

Better options in Botafogo
Wanted to like it more than we did. There is a shortcut through the square that saves about five minutes and somebody drew it on our map. Charming small hotel, and the tiling lifts it above the usual.
The wall to the corridor carries every conversation, and there was one at half past nine on the Monday.

Perfect for a long weekend
Third time in Rio de Janeiro and the first time I have got the hotel right. Travelling on my own, I never felt uneasy walking back into Botafogo late at night.

Tired and overpriced
There is a lift, which we were glad of on the way up with our bags. Clean bathroom, fresh towels daily, nothing to complain about. Three rooms on the same floor, which saved a lot of shouting up stairwells.
You cannot set the aircon below twenty-three, which in October is not quite enough. Breakfast stops at half past nine even at weekends, which felt early.

Exactly right
The kind of place you book for two nights and immediately regret not booking for four. The lift has one of those inner doors you have to pull shut, which the children opposite treated as the highlight of their week.
