  Fine, but not at that price

  The owners are kind and the breakfast is homemade, which counts for a lot. They keep a jar of sweets by the lift that nobody admits to eating from.

  Nowhere to put anything in the bathroom except the edge of the basin.

  Small place, big heart

  The bed was the surprise: firm, wide and made up with linen that actually felt like linen. Somebody had left a shelf of paperbacks by the window and I got through two of them.

  One person on the desk at ten in the evening means a queue when the airport bus arrives. The car park is a six-minute walk and costs more per night than we expected.

  Falls well short

  The owners are kind and the breakfast is homemade, which counts for a lot.

  There is construction across the street that starts at eight, so bring earplugs. Nobody told us the restaurant was closed for the week until we turned up hungry on the Monday.

  Better than the price suggests

  The bathroom is bigger than the one at home, with a rain shower and a bench to put things on. Nobody made me feel odd about eating alone, and the desk checked I had got back on the wet night.

  Blackout blinds would make a difference in November, when it is bright by eight.

  Nothing to complain about, nothing to rave about

  Room was warm enough in December, which was the main worry. You get more for the money here than at the two places I priced up in Mellah. A cat lives in the courtyard and considers the chairs to be hers.

  The furniture is dated and the corridors could do with a repaint.

  Not quite worth it

  We slept well: the room is dark, cool and quiet after ten. Mellah is pleasant to wander in the evening, and nothing felt far. Lovely for a couple of nights away, quiet and personal.

  The heating did not work properly for the first five nights and the fix took until the third day.
