Tucked into a side street in District VIII, The Archive Hotel District VIII is easy to walk past and hard to forget. It scores well on rooftop terrace, less so on being the cheapest option in District VIII. Nothing about it is trying to be photographed, which is a relief.

Decent, with reservations
Went in with low expectations after the last place. Quiet from about ten at night, once the bar downstairs empties out. They let us sit in the courtyard with our own wine on the last night. The Suite suited us well for a short stay. The concierge was helpful with tickets and directions.
Service in the bar was slow when it filled up after ten.

As good as Budapest gets
Booked this on a whim and glad I did. Twenty minutes to the conference centre, laundry back same day, invoice correct first time. I ended up in the same corner cafe three mornings running, which tells you something about District VIII.
Checkout is eleven and a late one costs about as much as another night's breakfast. Parking nearby is expensive, though that is Budapest rather than the hotel.

The terrace alone is worth it
Fast, stable wifi in the room rather than only in the lobby, which is rarer than it should be. Astonishingly quiet for somewhere this central - I never heard the street once. Travelling on my own, I never felt uneasy walking back into District VIII late at night.
Nothing at all, and we looked.

Not what the photos promised
District VIII is a sensible base, a few streets back from the crowds and still close to everything.
Coffee at breakfast comes from a machine rather than the bar downstairs, which is a shame.

No complaints, no fireworks
Turned up late, tired and grumpy, and were looked after. Wifi was quick enough for email, maps and an evening of streaming. Worked well for a group of us, with somewhere to sit together in the evening. The view over the rooftops from the balcony is a proper one.
Service in the bar was slow when it filled up after half past ten.

Not clean, not quiet, not cheap
One of the cleaners was lovely and clearly working with nothing.
The photographs and the reality are not the same building. Noise from the bar downstairs went on past two every night and the walls do nothing. The room smelled strongly of damp and the window did not open to air it out. The fridge in the Suite had somebody else's food in it.
