Worth every penny and then some
The courtyard rooms hear nothing but pigeons, which is the whole point. Four of us across two rooms on the same corridor, which they arranged without being asked. No faff with the room: dark, cool and quiet by ten. I left a charger behind and it arrived at home nine days later, no charge for the postage.
The lift is slow enough that we walked down from the fifth floor most days. The shower head is fixed high on the wall and cannot be angled.

Nice staff, tired building
Two nights, and two would have been plenty. Lovely for a couple of nights away, quiet and personal.
Thin walls, so we knew a fair amount about our neighbours and their travel plans. Nowhere to put anything in the bathroom except the edge of the basin.

Not fancy, but that was never the point; there is a lift, which in a building this old is a small miracle.

Simple and clean
Long Bien is pleasant to wander in the evening, and nothing felt far. Fine for a work trip: quiet floor, quick breakfast, cab rank outside.
The walk back from West Lake is all uphill, which I had not thought about.

Best breakfast of the trip
Long weekend, first time in Long Bien. Nobody made me feel odd about eating alone, and the desk checked I had got back on the wet night. Blackout curtains that meet in the middle, a mattress with some life in it, and silence after eleven. A bell rings somewhere nearby on the hour and I stopped noticing it by the second day.
That we booked only two nights.
