The Nomad Nest Sydney runs a free walking tour every morning and a family dinner most nights. Worth knowing before you arrive: female-only dorms, plus privacy curtains on bunks. It is the kind of place people rebook rather than recommend loudly.

Reliable rather than exciting
The lift has one of those inner doors you have to pull shut, which the children opposite treated as the highlight of their week. They let us sit in the courtyard with our own wine on the last night.
Roadworks on the corner from half past seven on the Friday, and nobody had warned us.

Good spot, tired rooms
Firm mattress, which is exactly how we like it. The terrace is a good place to sit with a book in the late afternoon. Good base for a few nights: clean dorm, big lockers, decent kitchen.
Two showers for eight people is not enough at half past six in the morning.

Well run and welcoming
Not fancy, but that was never the point. Washer and a drying rack, so we travelled home with a clean bag. Circular Quay has that mix of locals and visitors that makes a place feel alive rather than staged. Staff run things properly - keycard on the dorm door, quiet hours actually enforced.
The shower head is fixed high on the wall and cannot be angled.

Worth every penny and then some
Within two streets there is a noodle counter and a proper greengrocer, so I ate well and cheaply. Nobody made me feel odd about eating alone, and the desk checked I had got back on the wet night.
One person on the desk at half past ten in the evening means a queue when the airport bus arrives.

Good location, average room
A washing machine in the flat, which halfway through a long trip is a real thing. The dorm was fine and the showers were hot in the morning, which is the real test.
No screens on the windows, so it is a choice between the heat and the mosquitoes.

Would look elsewhere next time
Wanted to like it more than we did. Bag storage on the last day was useful. A washing machine in the flat, which halfway through a long trip is a real thing.
The air conditioning rattled on the third night; maintenance swapped a part the next morning. Not much space to move around the bed once a case is open on the floor.
