Genuinely special
Double glazing that works, so the tram going past is a rumour rather than an event. Spotless, including the places nobody checks - skirting boards, the kettle, under the bed. Milo sat with us over a map on the first evening and half our trip came out of that conversation.
Only that everywhere else now has a lot to live up to.

Ticked every box that mattered
Spotless, including the places nobody checks - skirting boards, the kettle, under the bed. Coffee on the balcony before breakfast, watching Frankton wake up. Worth the upgrade. Firm mattress, which suits us, and a duvet that is not the usual thin thing.
Breakfast stops at nine even at weekends, which felt early.

Practical rather than charming
Good for a few nights alone - I was left to get on with it. Breakfast is solid rather than lavish - almond croissants and reliable coffee.
The buffet gets picked over if you arrive after nine.

Passable, at a push
Firm mattress, which is exactly how we like it. The owners are kind and the breakfast is homemade, which counts for a lot.
Towels are changed only on request, which is sensible but was not explained.

Ask for a room at the back
Nobody made me feel odd about eating alone, and the desk checked I had got back on the wet night. They cook eggs how you ask and the bread comes from the bakery opposite, still warm.
One person on the desk at half past nine in the evening means a queue when the airport bus arrives. The bathroom light is on a motion sensor and comes on if you turn over in bed.

Faultless from start to finish
Housekeeping were quietly excellent and clearly took pride in the rooms. Homemade cake at four in the afternoon, whether or not you asked for it.
