The Velvet Fig Chinatown has fourteen rooms, one lift and a great deal of thought behind both. Expect individually designed rooms and, if you ask, quiet courtyard. The photographs are honest, which is rarer than it should be.

Does the job
Right, so. Easy place to stay on your own, and the area is fine to walk at night. My flight landed at one in the morning and the man on the desk still made me a tea.
The heating is on a timer and goes off at about nine, which in December you feel by morning.

Perfectly decent
Three rooms on the same floor, which saved a lot of shouting up stairwells.
Aircon only runs when the balcony door is properly shut, and the catch is temperamental.

Slept like a stone
The roof terrace at sunset is the reason to book this place - I went up every night. They lent me an umbrella on the wet Tuesday and did not ask for it back until I left.
Getting a taxi to find the entrance took some explaining.

Mixed, mostly good
They keep a jar of sweets by the lift that nobody admits to eating from. Check-in was straightforward and the desk answered questions properly.
A second bedside lamp and a couple more sockets would finish the room off.

Easy stay, no dramas
Somebody has thought about the fabrics, and it shows in a way photographs do not capture.
Shower pressure drops off when the floor is busy at about seven.

Our favourite find in Kuala Lumpur
Nobody made me feel odd about eating alone, and the desk checked I had got back on the wet night.
Nothing that would stop us booking again tomorrow.
